Hello everyone.
First of all, we want to thank you all for your kindness and support over the past three years. It has been an absolute joy to get to know so many of you and serve this community. We have some important news about the future of Griffeys’ that we would like to share with you.
Our lease at 4 Troy Road will be ending in July of this year, and due to a variety of factors, we have chosen not to renew at this location. Instead, we will be closing down the Griffeys’ Book Emporium retail store and transitioning to a pop-up and event-based model for the foreseeable future. The retail store will remain open regular hours through the end of May, and select hours throughout June (TBD) as we sell off remaining inventory and furnishings.
The factors in this decision are numerous, and include not only financial and economic considerations for the business, but personal needs as well. As many of you know, David and I opened this store together before we were even married, while we were still living with our parents, and now we are married with a young daughter and another baby on the way. I think it’s safe to say that our life circumstances and needs as a family have changed drastically since 2022 when we first opened Griffeys’!
We feel that transitioning to a pop-up model will allow us the flexibility to better meet our family obligations while still keeping a business we love and have built over the last three years alive and operating. Additionally, we will continue to offer bookbinding and repair services, and hope to expand our offerings in that area as Aria and David both learn new skills and work with new materials such as leather. We are planning to set up a home book binding studio, which will hopefully improve our efficiency in this area and allow us to take on even more commissions.
We want to emphasize that we aren’t going anywhere. Griffeys’ as the 4 Troy Road location may be winding down, but we the Griffey family, and Griffeys’ Book Emporium the company, are here to stay in Delaware for a long time to come! It is our hope that closing the store will allow us to be MORE active in this community, not less, as it will free up time and resources to do business that is more impactful for our customers and sustainable for us as entrepreneurs, parents, and partners.
Thank you for your kindness and understanding. We will have more details about the closure available shortly, including discounts and sale days, as we will be downsizing our inventory and selling off many of our fixtures as part of our transition. If you have any thoughts, questions, or comments, please feel free to reach out to us or stop into the store to chat. We are excited for this next chapter in our story, and we can’t wait to bring you along with us.
God bless,
Aria and David Griffey
